IT IS A WHITE CHRISTMAS....A GOLDEN RETRIEVERS DREAM !

Well I am very behind in my blogging but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do a photo shoot of my dogs... Love this picture...looks like Halo and Quila are singing Christmas carols....and maybe they are...
My girlfriend and I had so much fun trying to get some good pictures....why do we do it? Well I love my dogs and they are much more photogenic than I am...And cuter!
In the past I have had them wear hats etc but this year I decided to just have them in the background as it is much easier ....and I knew that keeping the puppy , Cyrus still was going to be a challenge.
Was able to get this nice picture of Quila and Halo

Then Quila and Cyrus

We then worked with Cyrus and his sister Tyra...a little more challenging....and we soon lost control...and then the really good pictures were achieved!

They stoled the hats and the race was on....

It is mine....no mine....

Mine.....
Catch me if you can

Tired at last...Tyra sits for a picture

Not to be out do e by his sister , Cyrus poses as well

Have a merry Christmas from my family to yours.....

SEARCH AND RESCUE MOCK....A WALK IN THE PARK

It has been awhile since I have posted...you would think I would have time but time seems to just fly by....so I am actually going to work backwards....the most recent event first
Oct 5, 2013 0830 Quila and I arrived at Blackfoot -Cooking Lake for the Walk In Th Park Mock....this included many organizations....police, ground SARs, SARDAA , cadets, etc from across Alberta. This was to test the ability to handle a large disaster and to ensure that communications stayed in place etc. Coming after the major flood that was seen in Alberta , especially in High River, it was important to take that experience and learn from it....fixing and improving on any areas that were a concern .
Thirty hiders were put into place....the cadets were the hiders.
It took awhile to get everything going....at 1115 our SARDAA group ,( five dog teams and be field tech), got its directions. We were deployed to two areas and the police dog Handlers  , two of them, we're deployed to a third area. This was different for us as we don't usually get deployed with more than one dog in an area, but off we went....discussing ,enroute , how we would coordinate the dogs etc.
Quila and I were with one other dog handler and the field tech. We had to walk a km through another area before getting to our search area...which proved interesting as there were lost people in that area.
Another one of our dog teams was ahead of us and their dogs found two hiders...both had injuries .
We continued on and shortly there after Quila found another hider....also injured...so we radio in per protocol , treated hiders wounds....but left hider there for group assigned area to "find".
We arrived at our start point for searching....we were doing a circle around a lake...so we decided one dog team would go one way and the second team the other way....meeting the middle. The field tech would go with me as I was the least experienced.
Quila did really well....going in and out of very thick bush. At one point she saw a squirrel and decided to chase it....this is something I will have to work to correct....she was corrected, brought back , refocused and she went back to work. We met the other team at the half way point....neither of us had found anything....so we decided to swap and cover the area that the other team had done...thus covering each area twice. Quila did find a group of three people that were sitting on a bench...alerted and so was rewarded....even though they were just hikers....it was good as she though she was doing her job. On completion there were no hiders found by either team...this took five hours of searching...the longest Quila had ever done...I was proud of her and pleased that she could stay focused.
Our other three dog handlers didn't find any hiders in there area either....turns out there were no hiders in either assigned area. This  is one thing I would like to see changed next year...there should be at least one hider in every area....so that are dogs get rewarded for there hard work.
Overall it was. Great experience and I now know some areas that need improvement before we do our final test.

Quila's Puppies At Eight Months....Party Time

As I was down in the Calgary area I decided to have a birthday party for Quila's pups....yes they are only eight months old , but November is just not a good party month !
On the Wednesday her son , Hunter and his family came...they unfortunately couldn't make the next night.
The three of them had a great time. It was so good to see what a fine pup he is growing into. Shannon will be showing him in conformation in August so we will get to spend more time with him then.

Halo, A very dirty...Quila and Hunter
All three of them posed with their party hats on with no problem....now the girls the next day were a different matter !

Halo and Hunter having game of tug....

Hunter and Halo playing....it wasn't so good for Hunter's foot...his pad was recently injured

THE GIRLS POOL PARTY.....

As it was a hot evening out the pool was a hit....all four sisters in it at once....they would come running all together....hit the pool with a splash...not sure how any water stayed in it !

Quila greeted each of her daughters ....then monitored their antics from a safe distance...

The girls were very careful not to run over their mother...they showed great respect towards her.

Boy could they move...getting pictures was a challenge !
It was beautiful seeing all four move as a unit...at full speed. If we could just bottle that energy !

So after we thought they were worn out... we tried...and I do mean tried...to get a group picture...wasn't easy and isn't pretty but here it is....

That is as good as it got...Quila is laying quite nicely ! The rest just wanted to go play some more....this was after two hours of playing already !

Now because we were all optimistic people we thought lets try the party hats !

Halo , in the first picture, did well....I think she likes the hats...it went downhill after that as you can see by the second picture ...which is Sadie and I think Bonnie....
The last picture is of Georgia....doing really well with her party hat on....except this is the next day at her home !....but at least it is on

Well the parties were a hit...both for the dogs and humans...hopefully we do it again...

SEARCH AND RESCUE....QUILA

It is really hard to get pictures while training as I am so busy watching Quila and trying not to fall in the bush etc...but here are a few pics...

I am going to say see is being thorough and checking the water....
No she is not in the water ...cooling off...as it is so hot out..she is searching....I am sure !

We are doing some navigations practises...always a welcome learning activity....

Discussing which way to go....

We are not lost !!

Tired after a long day of training

The dogs are tired too !!

FINISHING MY SAR BASIC COURSE

Anita is our instructor for SAR basic course....she does an excellent job and is so patient and knowledgable ....
I just needed my time out in the field to complete the course....this included some night work, a little man tracking as well.
Checking out and following footprints....it really is interesting and fun

A little more interesting in the dark....

Anita showing us how to look at the print..different light etc

I think it goes this way ?

Working in the bush at night was definitely a challenge...especially in the snow as well!
We managed to not get lost and to find some articles !

It was a really good learning experience ....search and rescue is not easy and there is so much to learn....but it is so much fun

HALO'S FIRST OFFICIAL SHOW

Shannon had Halo down on Vancouver Island and took her to the Comox show...she did really well....getting BPIB. BPIG, reserve winner's bitch...and the To top it off she also got her Canine Good Neighbour title...at six months old ! She did better than I could have ever hoped for....
Halo standing "nice" for the judge

Gliding around the ring....you would think she was a pro !

It took abit but she knows what it is all about now....is she not gorgeous !

SEARCH AND RESCUE.....the group

We have grown in numbers this year....since these pictures....some great people and their dogs have joined us....making our group even stronger

We have a debriefing at every training session....it allows us to look at what we accomplished for that training session , as well as where we need to work with our dogs.
It also allows us to hear about the other team members and how they did....it give us opportunities to help each other with our training etc.

A strong stay is very important

We do basic obedience at a lot of our sessions....we need it in working our dogs and it also helps to warm them up before working them in the field.
It also allows them to be around other dogs without interacting....meaning not trying to play with the other dogs...but working in their presence. It is important that they can work with other dogs around and not try and go to see them or play etc.

One of our members moved away....just a  group pic....not everyone was there
Members do come and go as life changes....but it is a strong group of dedicated people

Working together on some field work

Quila happily waiting in her crate till it is time to come out and work
She is not locked in her crate as she needs to be able to stay in her crate until given permission to come out....she is allowed to have her head out....she is pushing the boundary just a bit here !

Water searches are also an important part of our program.....here are some members out practising
